Writ plea against film dismissed
By Our Legal Correspondent
HYDERABAD, JAN. 14. Mr. Justice J. Chalameswar of the A.P. High
Court on Thursday night dismissed the writ petition filed against
the Telugu feature film ``Sammakka-Sarakka.''
The petition was filed by the Association of the Priests of the
Tribal Deities Sammakka and Sarakka. The petitioners alleged that
the film was distortion of history of the tribals and an affront
to their tradition and custom. The petitioner moved a special
house motion during the Sankranti vacation of the court and the
judge ordered screening of the film to be viewed by counsel and
the court.
The preview was held on Thursday evening. After the screening the
judge heard arguments at his residence till 11 pm and then
dictated a lengthy judgment till midnight.
Mr. Justice Chalameswar declared that the allegations by the
petitioners were not substantiated and declared the writ petition
frivolous, and imposed costs. He said the film was a social drama
and had no relation to the history except the names.
The film is slated for release tomorrow.
