U.P. wary of action against striking staff

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW, JAN. 19. The Uttar Pradesh Government today claimed further improvement in the power generation and transmission situation in the State even as the strike by more than 90,000 employees of the State Electricity Board entered the fifth day. The Government apparently was moving very cautiously to deal with the striking workers and was in no hurry to take penal action as announced earlier that those failing to join duty by this morning would be deemed to have resigned. The Chief Secretary, Mr. Yogendra Narain, told newspersons here that there were reports that employees had started reporting for work and further action would be taken after reviewing the situation.

The threats by the power workers' unions outside the State have become cause for real worry for the Government and it did not want to take any step which might make a solution impossible.Talks were being held at various levels to defuse the situation.

The Government has, however, made it very clear that there was no question of rescinding the decision to trifurcate the State Electricity Board which was the main demand of the employees. However, the Government had an open mind on other demands, including an improvement of service conditions, security to service etc. he added.
