Fernandes unveils 'limited war' doctrine
As military tensions with Pakistan continue
on the Line of Control in Kashmir, the Defence Minister, Mr.
George Fernandes, today unveiled the Government's new doctrine on
fighting ``limited wars'' with Islamabad.
New staff appointed in U.P.
The Uttar Pradesh Government today issued
appointment letters to 50 junior power engineers to replace the
dismissed striking employees of the State Electricity Board as
the stand-off between the two sides continued, an official
spokesman here said.

By-elections notified
The notification for holding of by-elections
to Bellary and Kannauj Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka and
Uttar Pradesh on February 17 were issued today marking the
opening of filing of nominations.
Reservation extended
The President has given assent to the
Constitution (79th Amendment) Act, 1999, extending reservations
for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and
State Assemblies for a further period of 10 years beyond January
25, 2000 and upto January 25, 2010.
Pak. threatens response to 'violations''
Pakistan today described `violations' of the
Line of Control (LoC) by Indian Army in Chamb sector on Saturday
as `intolerable' and threatened to ``respond appropriately''. The
threat was issued in a statement after a meeting of the army
commanders chaired by military ruler, Gen. Pervez Musharraf.
PM gives away bravery awards
The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
today gave away the bravery awards to 15 children and said no
religion was greater than helping others.
