Reservation extended

NEW DELHI, JAN. 24. The President has given assent to the Constitution (79th Amendment) Act, 1999, extending reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for a further period of 10 years beyond January 25, 2000 and upto January 25, 2010.

The Act also seeks to extend the provisions for nomination of Anglo-Indians to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for the same period or upto the 60th year from the commencement of the Constitution on January 26, 1950.

The Legislative Department in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs also issued a notification enforcing the 79th Amendment Act with effect from the afternoon of January 25, 2000.
