Cut the Gordian knot
Sir, - The Chief Executive of Pakistan is really forthcoming in
condemning the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane but whether
Islamabad is not encouraging militancy in the Kashmir Valley is a
moot point. He cannot establish his credibility by simply
condemning the hijacking. It appears that successive Governments
in Pakistan have wielded only the surgeon's scalpel while
targeting the Kashmir militants but never failed to use the
sledgehammer against the Indian Army operating in the troubled
State. Any convention will be useless if one party does not
respect it and he who knows only his side of the case knows
nothing.
Gen. Pervez Musharraf must know that India has the most number of
Muslims after Indonesia, while Pakistan ranks seventh in the
world. Muslims in India desire absolute peace in the subcontinent
and the ruler of Pakistan must cut the Gordian knot to herald a
new era in the relations between the two countries. Hostilities
during the Kargil conflict were instantly stopped at the instance
of the Pakistan army; at the present juncture, the same directive
should be given to the militant outfits fighting in the Valley so
that India can believe in the sincerity of Pakistan.
H. Syed Mathani,
Tiruchi
