Chiranjeev finishes joint 37th

JOHANNESBURG, JAN. 24. Chiranjeev Milkha Singh played his worst round on the final day of the Mercedez Benz South African Open golf championship on Sunday to end up in joint 37th position at the Randpark Club.

Two double bogeys, on the seventh and 16th, and three other bogeys nullified the five birdies he had in the final round and he finished with a 74 to share the 37th spot with five others at an overall four-under 284. The Indian pro, who had started the last round in joint 17th place, was well below form with his driving and he could have only a little more than 55 per cent success in hitting the greens in regulation.

On a rain-hit day when play had to be halted for about three hours, Swede Mathias Gronberg closed with a five-under 67 for a 14-under 274. Three players, including overnight leader Darren Fichardt of South Africa tied for the second place, a stroke behind the winner. Five others were a stroke further away.

The scores:

Mathias Gronberg (Swe) (70, 70, 67, 67) 274; Ricardo Gonzalez (Arg) (75, 66, 68, 66), Nick Price (Zim) (72, 69, 67, 67) and Darren Fichhardt (RSA) (68, 67, 67, 73) 275; Tjaart van der Wal (RSA) (71, 70, 69, 66), Jean-Francoise Reme (Fra) (68, 70, 69, 69), Ashley Roestoff (RSA) (69, 69, 69, 69), Retief Goosen (RSA) (68, 71, 68, 69) and John Mellor (Eng) (72, 72, 63, 69) 276; Bernhard Langer (Ger) (74, 69, 68, 66), Lee Westwood (Eng) (69, 68, 72, 68) and Greg Owen (Eng) (66, 72, 69, 70) 277.
