Another extension for J&K DGP likely
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR, JAN. 28. Even as many among the Jammu and Kashmir cadre
officers are eyeing the coveted post of Director-General of
Police, the present incumbent, Mr. Gurbachan Jagat, is likely to
get another extension.
With the officials remaining tightlipped over the State
Government's intention, it is believed that Mr. Jagat, whose term
is expiring on February 17 next, will continue to head the State
police at least for another year.
A senior official in the Union Home Ministry told TheHindu that
it favoured the extension in view of the disturbing security
situation.According to Union Home Ministry sources, the Chief
Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, is not averse to the extension.
Though some of his colleagues had expressed reservations in view
of some major militancy-related incidents, Dr. Abdullah
reportedly brushed them aside stating that the revival of the
police force goes to his credit. Sources said a strong
bureaucratic lobby in the State was also supporting Mr. Jagat.
Sources said two seniormost police officers were in the race for
the DGP post, but Dr. Abdullah was unwilling to appoint a State
cadre officer.
