BJP, JD(U) to hold talks today on Bellary bypoll

By Our Staff Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JAN. 28. The leaders of the BJP and the Janata Dal(U) will meet in Bangalore on Saturday to discuss the prospects of fielding a common candidate for the forthcoming byelection from the Bellary Lok Sabha constituency.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Friday, a senior BJP leader and the former local MLA, Mr. K. S. Eshwarappa, said that he and the BJP State unit President, Mr. B. S. Yediyurappa, would represent the BJP and the Janata Dal(U) State unit President, Mr. C. Byre Gowda, and the senior leader and former Minister, Mr. P. G. R. Sindhia, were likely to represent their party.

To a question, he said that Mr. Sindhia, who had earlier expressed his reservations about accepting a BJP consensus candidate, now appeared to have an ``open mind'' on the issue.

Mr. Eshwarappa said that a team of his party led by Mr. Yediyurappa visited Bellary on January 26 to elicit the opinion of the local party leaders. He said the overwhelming opinion of the party workers was that the party should contest the byelection.
