TUMKUR, JAN. 31. At least six persons were killed on Monday when a private bus they were travelling by rammed a roadside tree at Thumbadi in Koratagere taluk, 27 km from here on the Mysore- Kollegal Road.

The bus driver is said to have lost control over the vehicle when he tried to overtake a car. The bus, which left Madhugiri in the morning, met with the accident a little before noon.

Bommanna (45), Sherif (45), Suban Beg (35) and Sweta (7) were killed on the spot. An old woman died before she could reach the General Hospital at Tumkur, and a girl died in a hospital at Koratagere. They are yet to be identified.

The District Surgeon at Tumkur, Dr. Y. S. Raghavendra Rao told TheHindu that 21 persons, injured in the accident had been brought to the hospital. He referred four of them, who were seriously injured, to Bangalore hospitals for treatment.

He said, Mr. Rangappa (34), Mr. Geeta (25) and Ranganath (14) were shifted to NIMHANS, and Mr. Kayaz Khan (28) was shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Medical Centre, Bangalore.

Dr. Rao said two others too had to be shifted to Bangalore but there was no one from their side to accompany them.

Dr. Rao and Dr. Kalleshaiah, Resident Medical Officer, said many of the 21 injured had suffered fractures, and their condition was being watched.

Expressing their anger at the accident, people blocked the road along the Koratagere-Madhugiri stretch. This added to the inconvenience of the relatives of the injured to reach hospitals.

The Tumkur Zilla Panchayat president, Mr. G. J. Rajanna, visited hospital and held discussions with doctors treating the injured.
