By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, JAN. 31. Tension prevailed at the S.N. College here this morning following the arrest of 32 SFI students who gheraoed the college principal, Prof. V. K. Vijayan.

SFI and DYFI activists prevented the police from taking the arrested students to the police station by holding a dharna at the college gate. The CPI(M) leader, Mr. E. Kazim, inaugurated the dharna.

A police vehicle carrying the arrested students was stationed on the campus for quite some time. As many as 38 persons who picketed the college gate were removed by the police and taken to the station. While those arrested were let off on bail, those removed from the college gate were released after a warning. The SFI activists held the agitation in front of the principal's office to highlight the seriousness of the indefinite fast by the SFI State secretary, Mr. M. B. Rajesh, which entered the eighth day today. A police posse camping on the campus arrested the agitating students since there was a High Court order against agitations on the campus.

An SFI statement said that parents and SFI activists prevented the arrested students from being taken away, by blocking the gate. They alleged that the police had beaten up the agitating students. A march was taken out through the town in protest against the police action. The statement said the fasting leader's condition was deteriorating.
