Digital TV to be introduced in metros
NEW DELHI, FEB. 2. Digital television transmission will be
introduced this year in the four metropolitan cities of Delhi,
Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta, to mark the beginning of digital
technology in broadcasting.
``The entire analogue transmission will be phased out by 2,012,''
the Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati, Mr. Rajeeva Ratna
Shah told the 6th international conference and exhibition on
Terrestrial and Satellite Broadcasting.
Inaugurating the three-day conference, the Information and
Broadcasting (I&B) Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, said that even
while the country was progressing rapidly in broadcasting
technology, it had to be ensured that television reached the 71
per cent of the population which had no access to it.
The Government would soon complete an exercise on a
``comprehensive'' broadcasting legislation and its benefits would
be felt by the society.
Mr. Jaitley said that preventing technology from entering India
would mean repeating ``the mistake which delayed television by 20
years.''
Mr. Y. N. Chaturvedi, Secretary, I&B, said that direct-to-home
(DTH) television might soon find its way into the country,
changing the broadcasting scenario.
