terrorism radiating from the Afghanistan-Pakistan arc.
Cong. lends a twist to review debate
The debate over the Constitution Review
Commission set up by the Vajpayee Government took a new twist
today when the Congress(I) admitted that it too had set up a
similar commission when Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister.
'Water' may yet hang fire
The shooting of Ms. Deepa Mehta's film, Water,
continues to be bogged down by uncertainty, with the Uttar
Pradesh Government adopting an ambiguous attitude despite the
Union Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry's fresh
permission to the producer to shoot the film.
Pak. signal to U.S. on n-command
A National Command Authority (NCA), with an
``apex'' Employment Control Committee (ECC), has been set up to
``control and command'' Pakistan's nuclear weapons following
approval from the National Security Council. The apex ECC, which
will be the final authority to decide on the use of nuclear
weapons, will be chaired by the ``head of Government''.
BJD expels top leader for six years
In a major political development in Orissa,
the Biju Janata Dal president and Union Mines Minister, Mr.
Naveen Patnaik, today expelled the chairman of the political
affairs committee of his party, Mr. Bijoy Mahaptra, for` anti-
party activities' for six years.
Chadha fails to turn up in court
The Special Court for CBI cases here today
directed a fresh warrant against Mr. Win Chadha, former Bofors
agent and one of the accused in the `Rs. 64-crore Bofors payoffs
case', following his failure to appear before it.
Moves on to mollify Meira
The Congress(I) has deputed the CWC member,
Mr. Bhajan Lal, to persuade Ms. Meira Kumar to withdraw her
resignation from the party and the CWC. Four candidates for the
Haryana Assembly elections were changed today. The new candidates
are supporters of Ms. Kumar.
Ministers roughed up
The Union Minister of State for Forest and
Environment, Mr. Babulal Marandi and the Union Minister of State
for Food Processing, Syed Shahnawaz Hussain were today roughed up
by Youth Congress workers at the Ranchi airport when they were
about to board a chopper for campaigning in the Jharkhand areas.
U.P. Bill sent to President
The Uttar Pradesh Governor, Mr. Suraj Bhan has
referred the controversial U.P. Regulation of Public Religious
Buildings and Places Bill, 2000 to President K.R. Narayanan for
his assent.
PM may begin poll campaign in Bihar on Feb. 9
The Prime Minister, Mr. A. B. Vajpayee, is
expected to devote three days to campaigning in Bihar, one in
each of the phases of polling in the State, and he will also give
two days to Orissa, where the polling is in two phases, and one
day to Haryana.
CBI sends another letter to Hindujas
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has
sent yet another letter to the NRI Hinduja brothers asking them
to ``join'' the investigations into the Bofors payoffs case.
'Jehadi' banners surface in Pak.
An effort is under way to make the ritual of
February 5, a ``day of solidarity'' with the Kashmiris,
``different'' from the earlier years. And, the difference was
evident on the boulevards of Islamabad.
