CBI sends another letter to Hindujas

By Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI, FEB. 3. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sent yet another letter to the NRI Hinduja brothers asking them to ``join'' the investigations into the Bofors payoffs case.

In response to an earlier communication sent by the CBI to them in London and Geneva, the Hinduja brothers had expressed their inability to come to India for questioning as they were tied up in their business activities.

According to well-placed sources, a fresh communication has been sent to the Hinduja brothers informing them that their presence in India is required by the CBI for further probing the Bofors payoffs case in which the first-ever chargesheet was filed in October last, almost after a decade of registering the First Information Report (FIR).

The CBI has sent a fresh communication through diplomatic channels to the London-based group Chairman, Mr. Sri Chand Hinduja, his brother Mr. Gopi Chand Hinduja and the Geneva- based Mr. Prakash Hinduja.

Though the sources said that the CBI had not set out any time- frame for the Hinduja brothers to respond, it is said that the agency has now insisted that their presence in India for questioning is ``necessary.'' The Hinduja brothers had wanted the investigating officer to meet them in London and Geneva which was not acceptable to the CBI.
