Blasts in Manila
MANILA, FEB. 3. One person was killed and at least 38 others,
mostly students, were injured today in separate explosions in two
educational institutions in The Philippines capital, police said.
The first explosion rocked the Technological Institute of The
Philippines in the suburban city of Quezon in Manila, killing one
and injuring at least 37 others, two of them critically.
Parents rushed to nearby hospitals to check on their children but
it was not immediately clear whether the lone fatality was a
student or a security guard. According to an initial
investigation, the blast was caused by a grenade, which was
lobbed by an unidentified student at the gate of the school. Gen.
Edgardo Aglipay, a regional police chief, said the suspect threw
the grenade after a security guard did not allow him to enter
because he was not in uniform.
In nearby Trinity College, a student was critically injured when
a canister he was carrying packed with explosive material - known
locally as a pillbox - accidentally fell on the ground and
exploded, police said.
