BJP eyeing 40 municipal seats in AP

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, FEB. 3. The BJP proposes to enter the municipal elections in Andhra Pradesh with its eyes on 40 of the 103 civic bodies that will go to the polls next month.

Indicating this, the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Mr. Bandaru Dattatraya, told presspersons here that the State unit of the party would approach the NDA allies, particularly the ruling Telugu Desam, with a request that it be allowed to contest most of the municipal seats in the 40 municipalities identified by it, as it stands a good chance of winning them.

The claim, according to Mr. Dattatraya, was based on an internal assessment. The party had a good network in these areas.

Much, however, will depend on how the Telugu Desam views the BJP's claim for a ``total accommodation'' in the 40 municipalities, during discussions on an electoral understanding.
