M.P. Governor happy over law and order

BHOPAL, FEB. 3. The Madhya Pradesh Governor, Dr. Bhai Mahavir, today expressed satisfaction on the law and order situation in the State and said that a multifaceted strategy had been adopted to address the problem of naxalism, dacoity and abductions.

In his inaugural address to the Budget session of the State Assembly, the Governor said nine districts were plagued by the naxalite menace. However, effective measures were being taken to tackle this menace which had lately taken the shape of an inter- State problem, he added.

Notwithstanding, the proliferating incidents of communal frenzy in other parts of the country, Madhya Pradesh had maintained peace and tranquility, he said.

The State had bestowed equal respect to all religion and bad been successful in establishing an environment of communal harmony, he observed.

Dr. Mahavir called upon the members to pledge to make the State free from poverty, illiteracy and intolerance while reaffirming their faith in unity and fraternity.

Dr. Mahavir said an ambitious target of attaining 70 per cent literacy before the coming census had been mooted by the state and several programmes were being underlined to meet the goal.

The Padhna Badhna Andolan, under the community-based literacy campaign, was a step towards meeting the objective, he said. As many as 64 lakh people were being made literate with the help of 2.42 lakh Padhna Badhna Samitis.

On the agriculture front, with an estimated production of 63 lakh tonne, the State had this year witnessed a maximum output of rice during the last five years.

Besides, 83.44 lakh tonnes of wheat has been produced during 1998-99 which had been 5.49 lakh tonnes more than last years.

Likewise, the gross agricultural production during 1998-99 had reached 256.14 lakh tonnes, which was eight lakh tonnes more than the previous year.

Observing that the State was moving towards a white revolution, he said that around 1.5 lakh litres of milk was being despatched daily to Delhi from Ujjain, Indore and Gwalior.

Outlining the ``special attention'' being paid by the State towards horticulture, he said there had been a visible enhancement in the cultiviable area of fruits, flowers, vegetables and medicinal plants. The State had endeavoured to make a pragmatic usage of information technology by percolating it to the grassroot level, he said.
