Just another party

Sir, - The decision by the Tamil Maanila Congress president, Mr. G. K. Moopanar, to support Ms. Jayalalitha's party in the by- elections has been expected for quite some time. It is the same leader who came out of the Congress(I) when Mr. P. V. Narashima Rao decided to have alliance with the AIADMK, saying it was a corrupt party.

People who saw a beacon in the TMC when it said it would keep equidistance from corruption and communalism have now been let down. Mr. Moopanar's daily assertions of ushering in Kamaraj rule have been left to the winds. Now the TMC has become another party riding piggyback on the DMK or the AIADMK, like the two communist parties.

Sir, - Those who believed that the TMC was different from the Congress (I) have been proved wrong. Mr. Moopanar and his colleagues in the TMC do not have the tenacity and patience to go it alone. They are simply explaining away their inability using the phraseology, `secular forces' and `anti-people government'. Nationalism seems to have no chance of revival in Tamil Nadu, where national stalwarts ruled supreme once.

Sir, - It is really glad news that the TMC does not want to impose an election on Pondicherry and hence will continue to support the DMK Government there. How I wish this sensible thought had occurred to the party before it toppled the BJP Government at the Centre and forced a general election on the people. If Mr. Moopanar can support the AIADMK now, he could very well have supported the BJP-led Government then and saved unnecessary expenditure for the nation. Probably the drubbing the TMC got in the elections has forced him to go on the backfoot.

N. Mahadevan,

Chennai
