dated February 4, 1950: The late ''Tiger Varadachariar''
The mortal remains of Tiger Varadachariar were cremated on
February 1, at Madras, inside the Theosophical Society estate. A
large number of music lovers and sishyas of the departed Vidwan
were present. Tributes were paid to one of the greatest exponents
of Carnatic music:
Sangeetha Kalanidhi T. L. Venkatarama Aiyar said: ``The news of
the passing away of Tiger Varadachariar will be received with
profound shock by all lovers of Carnatic music. His renderings of
raga were characterised by a richness of imagination and
classical chasteness. Both in swara singing and raga alapana, he
showed a wonderful originality rarely to be met with. His style
of thana singing was unique. Tiger Varadachariar represented the
best traditions of Carnatic music.''
Sangeetha Kalanidhi Musiri Subramania Aiyar, Principal of the
Central College of Carnatic Music: ``The music world has really
become poorer by the passing away of this great artist. His way
of developing Ragas was unique and original in many respects. His
inimitable way of rendering Thanam is lost for ever.''
Sangita Kalanidhi Sri Mudikondan Venkatarama Aiyar: ``Tiger
Varadachariar, who was a staunch follower of Sampradaya and a
great exponent of Raga, Thana and Swara singing and also well-
versed in Lakshana. A man of amiable disposition towards one and
all and of more than 50 year's experience, he rendered signal
service to the cause of Carnatic music by giving performances and
serving in various institutions and Universities. The music-world
will bemoan his loss for ever.''
