Closure of institutions unnecessary: SFI

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, FEB. 7. Closing all schools and colleges for a week in Coimbatore is unnecessary, as there is no evidence of any violent agitation, either planned or undertaken by students in the city, according to the Students Federation of India (SFI).

In a petition presented to the District Collector, the Federation said that although the students were protesting against the bus- burning incident at Dharmapuri, no untoward incident had occurred.

Moreover, the action of the authorities in ordering indefinite closure of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), asking the inmates to vacate their hostels, and posting large number of policemen and a group of the Swift Action Force (SAF), had only created ``unnecessary apprehension'' in the area.

On Monday, the SFI cancelled its proposed demonstration to condemn the incident, on the ground that the tension had abated since the students called off their dharna and decided to meet the Chief Minister. However, there was a plan to organise a protest fast all over the State on Wednesday, to highlight the issue, according to SFI sources here.

In another statement issued here, the Coimbatore District Council of the All India Students Federation (AISF) urged the Government to order an enquiry into the incident by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
