Kipketer breaks World 1,000m indoor record
STUTTGART (GERMANY), FEB. 7. Denmark's World 800m outdoor
champion Wilson Kipketer broke the 1,000m indoor World record
here yesterday winning in a time of 2 minutes 15.25 seconds just
two months after undergoing a hernia operation.
The 29-year-old Kenyan-born athlete, who holds both the indoor
and outdoor 800m World records, broke Algerian Nourredine
Morceli's eight-year-old mark of 2:15.26 set in Birmingham,
England, in February 1992.
``It's a great surprise,'' Kipketer said. ``I didn't think I
would be in such good form so soon as I had a hernia operation
just before Christmas,'' he added.
Four other athletes posted the best times of the year in their
respective events with Bahama's World 4X100m relay champion
Sevatheda Fynes winning the 60m sprint in 7.04 seconds.
Two Ethiopians set the fastest times this year in their
respective events, Hailu Mekkonen running 3 minutes 35:58 seconds
in the 1500m, and Million Wolde 7:35.84 in the 3000m, while
Germany's Stefan Wolz cheered up the home crowd winning the 400m
in 46.08 seconds.- AFP
Denmark's Wilson Kipketer is obviously delighted after setting a
new World indoor record in 1,000m during the Stuttgart track meet
on Sunday.
