Two killed in police firing
By Our Staff Reporter
GUNTUR, FEB. 11. Two persons were killed and two others injured
when police opened fire at a group of people at China Ganjam
village in Prakasam district on Friday.
According to the Inspector-General of Police of Guntur range, Mr.
G.Md. Mazheruddin, at least 1,500 people attacked the police
station at China Ganjam on Friday. Snowwhite Salt Fields, a
private firm, wanted to extract salt from the sea water in an
area of 536 acres in the village. However, the villagers
protested against the setting up of the industry, as thousands of
people would lose their livelihood.
When the company embarked on the construction activity on January
19, hundreds of people protested which led to a chaos. When the
police tried to bring the situation under control, the people
hurled stones at them injuring three sub-inspectors (SIs).
When the company resumed the activity on Friday, the people
protested again. Meanwhile, the eight persons, who were accused
in the case of hurling stones at the police, were also brought to
the police station. Enraged by this, the people attacked the
police station. The Circle Inspector (CI) of Inkollu fired tear-
gas shells to quell the mobs.
Soon, the police opened fire at the mobs. Two persons - Raghava
Reddy and Pulla Reddy - died on the spot, while two other, Ms.
Narsamma and Mr. Venkata Rao, received bullet injuries.
