Down memory lane
Should I have the time machine of H. G. Wells, I would love to go
back to my school days at Sankara Vidyashramam.
Pleasant are the memories of school - the curriculum, friendly
banter with my friends, unforgettable experiences with my
mentors, insouciant days of childhood .... there are volumes to
write.
The day usually starts with the assembly - with us, boys and
girls, clad in neat, fresh uniforms. The qualities of unity and
uniformity are sown in our minds. In fact, this is one of the
prime reasons why childhood stands unique and uncontaminated from
a much polluted adulthood. The slogan "India is my country and
all Indians are my brothers and sisters" gets its real meaning
here.
Changing scenes of the classrooms, with lectures by teachers -
all these carry fond memories. The most dry and uninteresting
subjects would sound interesting and the most complicated would
be a cake-walk thanks to my instructors who excelled in the art
of making things simple. But for their care, compassion and
guidance, I would not have been what I am today.
The celebrations we had, with the teachers getting involved in
the task bringing out the best in us, are still fresh. These
occasions were the times when we tried out our skills, our
talents were discovered and when our thoughts were given voice
to. The care given to each student in shaping his career and
personality was remarkable.
Reminiscing about school and its delights move me a great deal.
You may even call it a weakness. But reviving those innocent,
sweet simple years again ... I only wish it happens all over
again.
I end with very fond memories of school.
S. RUKMANI, Past pupil
