Catching schools on the net

IN THESE days, when a `web presence' seems more important than anything else, here is an opportunity for schools to announce their existence on the net. Without spending a pie.

Though a number of free servers are available for schools to become net-savvy, it took Mr. P. Jayachandran, of Lions Club of Annai, to bring it to the city and the State. ``We have just made use of free space to create a portal where all allied groups can log on,'' Mr. Jayachandran says. The site - www.schoolnet.8k.com - invites ``State board, CBSE, Matriculation and Anglo Indian'' schools to use the free space.

In the site the schools canpost information on the history of the school, mission statement, outstanding achievements, annual days and functions, alumni details and periodic updates with pictures. E-mail addresses will be allotted with an easy retrieval facility (through telephone). Another advantage is that links to already existing sites will also be accepted.

Even those who are avowedly net-unfriendly have no cause for apprehension. ``Design and layout on the site will be handled by us, without any charge. All that the management has to do, is to give us the relevant information,'' Mr. Jayachandran says. Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly updates will be provided at nominal charge.
