Samsung subsidiary to market hi-tech products

NEW DELHI, FEB 19. The Korean chaebol Samsung has recently
received Government clearance to set up a company to exclusively
market state-of-the-art hitech products such as optical disk
drives, notebook PCs, cellular phones and hand held PC products.
These products, slated for introduction in the Indian market,
will be retailed through the present set of distributors now
selling some of Samsung products. The new company, which has the
approval to market products manufactured by various Samsung
subsidiaries, will provide supportive service network, said
company officials.
Samsung Electronics India Electronics Private Limited (SEIP) will
be the third company from the Korean group to start operations in
the country.
The first was Samsung India Electronics Limited which has been
selling audio video products and home appliances since 1995 while
Samsung India Software Operations Unit was set up in 1996 to
export computer software.
Samsung had set up a liasion office in 1994 to test the Indian
market for its IT and telecom products.Officials said Samsung had
global leadership in the products that would be marketed in India
by the new company.
It has a 14 per cent world market share in colour monitors and is
ranked number one world-wide. In the area of hard disk drive, its
market share is close to eight per cent.
``In India, Samsung seeks to build technology leadership in all
product categories. With this aim, Samsung plans to introduce
advanced products such as LCD monitors as well as professional
category colour monitors in the Indian market this year,'' said a
company official.
Some other products to be launched in the Indian market include
higher capacity hard disk drives, DVD-ROMs as well as products
incorporating advanced Combo drive functioning.
