Constructing the navamsa chart

GIVEN the place, time and date of a birth (Chennai, 11 a.m., February 16, 2000, in our example), we have seen the basic horoscope constructed for the native showing Mesha as Lagna, and the planets positioned in various Signs as follows: Jupiter and Saturn in Mesha; Rahu in Kataka; Moon and Venus in Dhanus; Sun, Mercury and Kethu in Makara; and Mars in Kumbha.

This is the Rasi Chart, so termed as it shows the Lagna and the nine planets in position in the 12 Rasi-s (Zodiacal Signs).

The Navamsa Chart is a supporting construction which will show the Lagna and the nine planets more accurately positioned, namely in the 1/9 (Navamsa) divisions of each of the 12 Rasi Signs.

While the Rasi Chart shows the disposition of Lagna and Planets in the 12 compartments (30 degrees each) of the Zodiac, the Navamsa Chart shows them in 12 x 9 = 108 smaller boxes (each covering 360/ 108 = 3 degrees and 20 minutes of the Zodiacal arc).

However, we have seen that Mesha, Simha, and Dhanus Rasi-s have their Navamsa-s run from Mesha to Dhanus; Rishabha, Kanya, and Makara Rasi-s from Makara to Kanya; Mithuna, Thula and Kumbha have their Navamsa-s run from Thula to Mithuna; and, Kataka, Vrischika and Meena have theirs run from Kataka to Meena. In the process, each Zodiacal Sign is repeated 9 times to give the 108 subdivisions of Navamsa.

Reading from the Panchanga we can see for time of birth the positions of the nine planets stated in star-quarters which too make up the same 27 x 4 = 108 small compartments.

Queries answered

What is Raja Yoga Bhangam? Are there remedies for its effects?

Dr. V. K. Venkatesh, Mysore

Raja Yoga Bhangam is caused by an unfortunate combination of planets in a horoscope, by which the benefits of potential Raja Yogam can be denied to the native. Let us take a horoscope with Dhanur Lagna, Saturn in the First, and the Sun and Mercury in the Tenth in Kanya.

Mercury exalted in the 10th house causes Bhadra Yoga. Srinatha Yoga is also there. In addition, Dharmakarmadhipathi Yoga is present. But Saturn, occupying the Lagna, aspects planets in the 7th and the 10th. Thus he causes Bhanga and the full benefits of the favourable Yoga-s can be denied.

For any Raja Yoga, the planet(s) causing Raja Yoga should be free from affliction. Where such affliction is there, the planet afflicting as well as the one(s) afflicted should be worshipped and propitiated. By studying horoscopes carefully, the right measures of amelioration can be arrived at.
