Report on Kargil to be tabled tomorrow

NEW DELHI, FEB. 22. The Government today announced that the
Subrahmanyam committee report which went into the Kargil conflict
would be placed in Parliament on Thursday.
Announcing this, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister and Cabinet
spokesman, Mr. Pramod Mahajan, said the full report would be
placed before Parliament. It could be accompanied by the action
taken report. The ATR was presently under preparation, he added.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Union Cabinet, Mr.
Mahajan said the Government also decided to introduce a
Centrally-sponsored scheme, under which senior citizens would be
provided 10 kg of foodgrains free of cost every month.
According to the 1991 census, the country had 5.66 crore senior
citizens, defined as those above 60 years of age., and already
there was a scheme under which a pension of Rs. 75 per month is
being given to 53.35 lakh people. `Annapoorna', the new scheme
for which a provision of Rs. 100 crores was being made, would
benefit an additional 13.76 lakh persons.
