NRI investor arrested
By V. S. Sambandan
COLOMBO, FEB. 28. An Indian investor from the U.S. who had come
to Colombo to start a private refinery project has been arrested
for overstaying.
Indian High Commission officials said there had been no official
word as yet on the arrest of Dr. Datla Venkata Subba Raju, who
was here to invest in a $2,400 million-oil refinery project. The
High Commission has filed a complaint with the island's Inspector
General of Police, through the Foreign Ministry.
The arrest came to light last week when an Indian who went to a
hotel to meet the investor was told that he had been arrested.
Under the normal procedure, those overstaying are produced before
the immigration officials but the investor was taken into custody
by the police. He is to be produced before the Magistrate
tomorrow.
