Plastic pays for charity

THESE DAYS, plastic generally does the trick. All it takes is a swipe. With the launch of the Mukti Card, plastic can even buy `Freedom'!

The Mukti Freedom card offering discounts will be launched on March 10, by Mukti, an NGO providing aids to the disabled.

Organised as a fund-raising programme, the plan is simple. A donor, on paying Rs. 500 towards the corpus fund of the organisation, will receive a Freedom Card, which allows discounts over a variety of products.

The donor can also have the satisfaction of having helped an amputee/ polio victim, with artificial limbs.

From garments, textiles, jewellery, handicrafts, beauty parlours, florists, restaurants, snack bars, travel agents, even physicians and opticians, around 100 different points in the city offer discounts varying from 2 per cent to 15 per cent on purchases, explains Ms.Meena Dadha, chairperson, Mukti. Apart from the discount, quarterly raffles will be organised, with 20 prizes for the card holders.

The card is renewable annually and also gets 50 per cent tax exemption under 80 G. Donations can be sent to the Mukti office, at 1, Station Road, Meenambakkam and the cards will be subsequently delivered at home.

At present around 300 cards have been bought and the organisation hopes to clear at least 2000 cards by the end of March.
