Railways targeted on eve of Bihar bandh
Widespread protests by RJD supporters today
disrupted rail and road traffic in a big way, even as the Left
and democratic forces were seemingly making common cause in
pursuance of their demand for the removal of the Governor,
Mr.V.C. Pande, for his alleged unconstitutional action of
appointing Mr. Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister.
RSS may move in to save Vajpayee Govt.
The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
is reported to have impressed upon the Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh (RSS) leadership to bail his government out of the impasse
in Parliament over the Keshubhai Patel Ministry's January 3
notification, permitting state employees to participate in the
RSS activities.
Recall Governor, says CPI(ML)
A delegation of the CPI(ML) called on the
President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, today and demanded the immediate
recall of the Governor of Bihar, Mr. Vinod Pande, for installing
the Nitish Kumar-led NDA Government in the State in an ``illegal
and unconstitutional'' manner, even as the Janata Dal (United)
gave a call to the newly-elected Bihar Congress(I) legislators to
exercise their ``conscience'' during the trial of strength in the
Bihar Assembly to be faced by the Chief Minister.
India firm on continuing Lahore bus service
India today declared its unflagging
commitment to the continuation of the Delhi-Lahore bus run,
despite a public demonstration to the contrary in Punjab.
Geeta Mukherjee passes away
Veteran Communist leader, Ms. Geeta
Mukherjee, 76, died here this morning following a massive heart
attack. Popularly known as `Geetadi', the veteran MP who won
every Lok Sabha election from Panskura in West Bengal since 1980,
was in the forefront till the last.
Taslima visit on Monday
The Bangladeshi writer, Ms. Taslima Nasreen,
will be coming here on Monday to release the Marathi translation
of her book Phitamphat.
Ikhwan leader shot dead
Mohammad Amin Wani, alias `Setha Gujur', a top
leader of the counter-insurgent Ikhwan outfit, was shot dead by
militants in Anantnag town last evening when he was standing at a
bus stop.
Interest rates may be cut
The RBI Deputy Governor, Mr. Y. V. Reddy, today
hinted at a reduction in interest rates saying the withdrawal of
interest tax, estimated to cost the exchequer Rs. 1,000 crores,
will lead to a fall in transaction cost of banks.
BJP under 'pressure' on Gujarat order
Under growing pressure from its allies and
the office of the Lok Sabha Speaker to sort out the impasse in
Parliament, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders today began
talking about the ``possibility'' of the Gujarat Government
withdrawing the order allowing government servants to participate
in the activities of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
India will not yield to pressure on CTBT: PM
The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
today asserted that India would not succumb to any pressure on
signing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and would keep
intact its sovereignty and rights.
Left to vote against Nitish Govt.
The CPI and the CPI (M-L) which have 11 MLAs
in the Bihar Assembly would vote against the Nitish Kumar
Government when the latter put its strength to test on the floor
of the House, Mr. Dasari Nagabhushana Rao, member of the CPI
National Council, said.
