CM flays Cong., sees TDP wave

By Our Special Correspondent

CHITTOOR, MARCH 4. The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, today perceived a strong TDP wave which, he said, would blow the Congress(I) off its feet in at least 90 out of 103 municipalities going to the polls in the State. People had seen enough of their power thirst and greed for wealth in sharp contrast to the TDP's commitment for service and probity in public life, Mr. Naidu said, addressing an election meeting at Chittoor.

Using his strong anti-Congress rhetorics, the Chief Minister criticised the bomb culture and said that rowdyism was synonymous with Congress(I). He could claim with some legitimate pride that the two evils now largely remained under control during the TDP rule, he said. ``I will not rest until I crush and root out the two deep maladies which the Congress(I) allowed to grow unchecked especially in the Rayalaseema area,'' Mr. Naidu thundered. In his bid to cite a specific instance in this context, he recalled how rowdyism, which was gripping the Chittoor town five years ago, had been crushed with an iron hand. He appealed to the ``knowledgeable voters'' of Chittoor town to choose between anarchy and development while they exercised their franchise in the coming municipal elections. ``I am sure you will correct the mistake you have committed in the Assembly elections,'' Mr. Naidu told the gathering meaning their electing the Congress(I) candidate to the Chittoor Assembly segment.

At all the four places where Mr. Naidu addressed election meetings today in his native Chittoor district, he reeled out, as he probably must have done at all his other meetings as well, the statistics quoting a ``private survey'' he got done on the most important needs and shortcomings of each municipality, MRO office and police stations in the State. By doing so he not only exposed in public their shortcomings but also indirectly tickled the public to be after them till they delivered.

As a shot in the arm for the TDP, on the eve of Mr. Naidu's visit, the former Chittoor Municipal Chairman, Mr. Jyothinathan, quit the Congress(I) and joined TDP along with ten of his supporters including former councillors.

According to a report Mr. Chandrababu Naidu blamed the Congress for all the ills plaguing civic bodies as it was in power for most part of the half a century after independence.

He told an election meeting that the TDP would offer a transparent administration in civic bodies.
