Role of maha dasas

FOR the birth in Chennai at 11 a.m. on February 1, 2000, we have constructed Rasi and Navamsa Charts, showing how Lagna, and the nine planets, are placed in each. We shall analyse later how these positions reveal the physical, mental, personality, and social traits of the individual. The nine planets also play particular durational roles in the life of every native. These roles take the name of Maha Dasas. The durations of Maha Dasas are fixed for the planets. Our seers have taken the possible life-span of human beings as 120 years. This total length comes under the respective Maha Dasas, in years, of the nine planets in the following sequence: Kethu 7; Venus 20; the Sun 6; the Moon 10; Mars 7; Rahu 18; Jupiter 16; Saturn 19; and Mercury 17. Should someone live beyond 120 years, the cycle of Maha Dasas will begin again at the appropriate stage where it started the first time. The first Maha Dasa for a native will commence based on the star ruling at birth. Since there are nine planets and 27 stars, obviously each planet must cover 3 stars. The following table shows the coverage:

Births under Aswini, Makha, and Moola will begin with Kethu's Maha Dasa; Bharani, Pooram, and Poorvashada with Venus's; Krittika, Uttara, and Uttarashada with the Sun's; Rohini, Hasta, and Sravana (Thiruvonam) with the Moon's; Mrigasira, Chithirai, and Sravishta (Avittam) with Mar's; Arudra (Thiruvadirai), Swathi, and Sathabhishak (Sathayam) with Rahu's; Punarvasu, Visakha, and Poorattadhi with Jupiter's; Pushya (Poosa), Anuradha (Anusha), and Uthirattadhi with Saturn's; and Aslesha (Ayilyam), Jyeshta (Kettai), and Revathi with the Maha dasa of Mercury.

Since the birth-star in the case we have is Moola, it follows that the native's life begins with the Maha Dasa of Venus.

Queries answered

What is meant by Chandrashtama?

M. C. Srinivasan, Basaveswara Nagar, Bangalore.

The luminaries, Sun and Moon, have a strong bearing on an individual's life, with the Moon governing the mind and emotions. Chandrashtama, as the term indicates, is the approximate duration of two days and a quarter when the Moon passes through the Eight Sign from one's Moon Sign at birth. If your birth is in Dhanus (Rasi), for instance, the period of two days and 6 hours when the Moon transits in Kataka, is the period of Chandrashtama. The Eighth is not a good Sign generally. When the significator of the Mind and the Emotions is passing through it one may not be in the best disposition to take clear decisions or act rightly. This risk must be guarded against, particularly when the Moon transiting the Eighth is in its fortnightly waning phase.
