CBI to probe defence contract

NEW DELHI, MARCH 12. The Defence Ministry has asked the CBI to probe an alleged multi-million fraud of supply of over 16,000 rounds of sub-standard 130 mm and 122 mm illuminating ammunition to the Indian army by a Hong Kong- based company Pitcare Limited.

The probe was ordered by the Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes, after Army experts found the ammunition to be defective during trial runs and marked that the mortars were ``not fit for use'', sources said.
