Case for CIFTA
Sir, - In your Editorial (March 4), you have welcomed the
formation of the Indo-Sri Lanka Free Trade area. Your comments on
the SAFTA are relevant and appropriate. For historical reasons
the formation of SAARC and SAFTA has been only a modest success
at best.
As part of this dialogue India should evolve beneficial and
meaningful talks with China on the formation of CIFTA or China
India Free Trade Area. In the emerging scenario of mergers,
megamergers and formation of trade zones such as NAFTA, European
Union and ASEAN, CIFTA will make a significant contribution
towards consolidation and increasing economic and technological
opportunities in this part of the world. The recent discussions
of our Industry Minister, Mr. Murasoli Maran, with China are to
be welcomed. Sri Lanka should be part of this emerging scenario
between India and China in forming a major free trade area.
H. N. Ramakrishna,
Bangalore
