India an important factor for U.S.: Wisner
WASHINGTON, MARCH 20. The U.S. President, Mr. Bill Clinton's
visit to India has given the U.S. an opportunity to create for
itself a privileged position in the South Asian country, but he
must tread softly on controversial issues there, the former U.S.
Ambassador to India, Mr. Frank Wisner, has said.
Mr. Clinton's visit, he said, ``is a terrific opportunity for the
U.S. to root itself in the region, to get some traction on the
issues to create a privileged position for us as we go forward''.
``India would be an important factor in Asia's future and in our
relationship,'' he said during a presentation for the media at
the White House, organised by its press office on Sunday.
