Test series win was historic: Bacher

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22. The just-concluded South African tour of India was the ``most successful ever'' undertaken by the team, according to managing director of United Cricket Board of South Africa, Dr. Ali Bacher.

``The tour to India has undoubtedly been the most successful tour ever undertaken by a South African team,'' Bacher said, praising his team's splendid performance.

South Africa blanked India 2-0 in the Test series, the first team to do so in 13 years, but struggled in the one-dayers, losing 2- 3.

``A tour of the sub-continent is known in world cricket as the most daunting task any team can face and the South African national squad turned the challenge into a great success.

``The Test series victory was historic as it had been 13 years since India lost a series on home soil. The one-day international series displayed breathtaking cricket and was an extremely close affair,'' Bacher added.

Bacher was all praise for South African skipper Hansie Cronje. ``The victory in the Test series and the close battle in the one- day internationals was a team effort, but special mention must be made of the outstanding leadership shown by Hansie Cronje on this tour.''
