Beware of collapse, Clinton to tell Pak.
JAIPUR, MARCH 24. The U.S. President, Mr. Bill Clinton, would
warn Pakistani military ruler, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, when they
meet in Islamabad, that Pakistan could collapse economically if
it continued to confront India over Kashmir and that in the event
of a war between the two neighbours, Washington would not
intervene to help Islamabad.
This was stated by Mr. Clinton's National Security Adviser, Mr.
Sandy Berger, while giving the first authoritative outline of Mr.
Clinton's scheduled talks with the Pakistani leadership.
Mr. Clinton would insist that it was in the interests of Pakistan
to calm the situation in Kashmir so that the nation could devote
more attention and resources to serious economic, civil and
political problems, Mr. Berger, who is accompanying the President
told reporters here on Thursday night.
Mr. Berger said Mr. Clinton would convey ``hard realities'' to
General Musharraf and warn him that it would be wrong to assume
that the U.S.. would intervene on Pakistan's behalf should it go
to war with India.
