'India bound to become Security Council member'

WASHINGTON, MARCH 24. India is bound to become a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council at its next reorganisation, the U.S. Democratic Congressman, Mr. Sam Gejdenson, has said.

Addressing the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin on its annual Legislative Day here on Thursday, he said besides India, he expects Japan, Germany and Brazil to be admitted to permanent membership. ``The question is going to be how to structurally do that without creating more gridlock,'' Mr. Gejdenson, ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee, said.

``Often times, one country (a veto-wielding permanent member) can stop the whole process,'' he said, adding that the negotiation for expansion of the Security Council would be around the veto. ``But I think that there is general agreement that those are the countries that are being looked at to make the U.N. a more representative body,'' he said.
