Captain's knock by Adams
KINGSTON (JAMAICA), MARCH 27. Jimmy Adams played an innings
befitting his new responsibilities as West Indies captain to put
his team within touching distance of Zimbabwe's first innings
total of 308 in a tense second and final Test.
Adams batted with great patience and determination throughout the
third day and was rewarded with an unbeaten 87 off 321 balls on
the rapidly wearing Sabina Park pitch.
With fast bowler Franklyn Rose contributing 53 not out, his
maiden Test half-century, the eighth wicket pair put on 124 to
guide West Indies to 295, just 13 short of Zimbabwe.
Left-hander Adams, promoted to skipper in place of Brian Lara
after the disastrous tour of New Zealand, kept West Indies in the
hunt for a repeat five-day success over Zimbabwe.
He began the day on nine and was a picture of patience, an aspect
of the West Indies games that has been lacking of late.
He did not strike the first of five boundaries until he had faced
147 balls and spent 258 minutes at the crease.
But the glorious cover drive off Brian Murphy was almost worth
the wait.
Rose, who has a highest first-class score of 96, mixed solid
defence with a range of attacking shots. His innings included
eight fours.
