Judge surrenders
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, MARCH 29. The suspended judge, Mr. J. W. Singh, wanted by
a court to face trial in a case regarding his links with the
underworld and who had been absconding for a month, surrendered
before the police today as per the directive of the Bombay High
Court.
He would be produced before the trial court tomorrow for passing
of the appropriate remand orders.
As directed Mr. Singh appeared before Mr. Justice P. S. Patankar
and Mr. Justice Rajan Kochar of the High Court, who told his
lawyers that the court would not be able to go ahead with his
petition challenging his prosecution under the Maharashtra
Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and seeking personal
liberty during the hearing unless he surrendered.
The Advocate-General, Mr. Ghulam Vahanvati, objected stating that
his plea for liberty needed no hearing for the court had earlier
rejected his application for anticipatory bail.
The judge's lawyers said their client would surrender only after
appearing in the trial court which had summoned him. The court
recorded the lawyers statement and posted the matter for further
hearing on March 31 next.
