Third Front proposal may not work: Left

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 29. The coming together of four former Prime Ministers is seen in Left circles as a positive development but there is scepticism if it would lead to the revival of the ``third front''.

Significance, however, is attached to the very fact that four senior leaders who have been at the helm of affairs have chosen to speak out. ``It does make a difference when leaders of this stature express their anxieties about issues which have implications for the country's future'', the CPI general secretary, Mr. A. B. Bardhan, said.

Mr. Bardhan said it was immaterial whether the move would lead to anything bigger, like a new political alliance. What was important was that issues such as ``reckless'' privatisation, growing unemployment and the ``worsening'' situation in Jammu and Kashmir were being highlighted by some very responsible leaders. ``To say that it is simply an attempt by them to get back into active political life is to trivialise the issue'', he said.

To the CPI(M) it was a ``serious'' initiative and could serve as a catalyst for regrouping of anti-BJP and anti- Congress(I) forces. Sources in the party said it was premature to predict that it would revive the ``third front'' but would certainly encourage a realignment of forces.
