Memorial to Indian World War heroes
LONDON, MARCH 29. A memorial to recall the contribution of the
people of the Indian Sub-continent, Africa and the Caribbean who
volunteered to serve in the first and second World Wars in the
British army is being planned here.
The œ1.9 million memorial gate will be built at the top of
Constitution Hill at the Hyde Park corner.
It will take the form of commemorative gates with an adjacent
pavilion set on a paved area. The design by Mr. Liam O'Connor of
London was the winning entry in a competition in which five other
leading designers participated, it was officially announced
today.
The Millennium Commission will contribute œ912,000 for the
Memorial Gates Trust.
The trust chairman, Baroness Shreela Flather, said without the
2.8 million volunteers from the Indian Sub-continent in the World
War II, the outcome could have been different, particularly in
North Africa and Burma.
