Army to 'hit hard' militant bases
NEW DELHI, APRIL 3. The Army today decided to ``hit hard''
militant bases, particularly concentrations of foreign
mercenaries, in the Jammu and Kashmir hinterland and these
operations figured prominently at the week-long bi-annual Army
Commanders conference which began here today.
The conference, which was opened by the Chief of Army Staff,
General V. P. Malik, has been called to have top level review of
prevailing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, other army
operations, policy and plans.
Attended by the six Army Commanders of the Western, Northern,
Southern, Eastern, Central and Army training commands, besides
principal staff officers at headquarters, the conference focussed
on carrying out large-scale joint operations on the suspected
Pakistani militants' hideouts.
Though the Army Chief dwelt at length on these various crucial
issues while opening the conference, the Army Public Relations
did not release the contents of Gen. Malik's address.
The Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes and the chiefs of
Naval and Air staff would also be addressing the six- day
conference, an official release said.
