Major racket in fake dollars unearthed
By Our Staff Reporter
Madurai, APRIL 5: The CB-CID police, Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday
effected a major seizure of counterfeit 100 dollar notes at
Sivakasi and are on the lookout for an unidentified Australian
national in this connection.
The seizure is valued at a face value of Rs. 3 crores in Indian
currency. Mr.B.Sunderarajan, DSP, CB-CID, Madurai, told newsmen
that said the arrested man had confessed that counterfeit dollar
bills with a face value of about Rs.12 crores had already been
given to the conduits.
Based on the specific information provided by Karuppaiah, who was
arrested last week in connection with another case, the CB-CID
sleuths raided a printing press at Sivakasi on Tuesday and
arrested the owner Vijayakumar (20) and an agent, S.S. Narayanan
(42). The latter, who operated as a middleman, gave Vijayakumar
Rs. 50,000 as advance for printing the fake notes, police said.
Narayanan received Rs.2 lakhs from a broker in Chennai who, he
claimed, had received money and negatives from an Australian.
Police are now on the lookout for both the broker and the
Australian.
While Vijayakumar was a first-time offender, Narayanan had
already been named accused in similar cases.
