Kanika Bandyopadhyay dead
CALCUTTA, APRIL 5. Ms. Kanika Bandyopadhyay, exponent of
Rabindranath Tagore songs, whose melodious voice won the hearts
of millions over half-a-century, died at the State-run SSKM
hospital on Wednesday morning after a protracted illness.
Ms. Bandyopadhyay (76), one of the few surviving disciples of
Tagore, was admitted to the hospital on March 8 with complains of
acute lung infection and cardiological complications, hospital
sources said here.
Winner of several awards including Padmashree, Desikottam (the
highest award of Visva Bharati University), EMI Golden Disc and
Allauddin Khan Awards, Ms. Kanika Bandyopadhyay was married to
Mr. Birendra Chandra Bandyopadhyay, who was a deputy librarian of
Visva Bharati University, in 1945.The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal
Behari Vajpayee today condoled the death of noted Rabindra
Sangeet exponent Kanika Bandopadhyay, and said her passing away
is a loss to the world of Indian music and culture.
