DD launches 24-hr. Kannada channel
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, APRIL 5. The Chief Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna, today
said he had written to the Union Minister of State for
Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Arun Jaitley, urging him to
give more airtime for Kannada programmes on prime time on
Doordarshan's national channel.
Inaugurating the new 24-hour regional Kannada channel, `Chandana'
at the Doordarshan Kendra here, Mr. Krishna said this being the
information age, a channel of this kind with tremendous reach
that mirrored the cultural and social ethos of the people of
Karnataka, was vital.
``The world is regarding India with something of an envy, knowing
that we are a nation of the future. With the so-called cultural
invasion by foreign media and satellite channels, it has become
necessary to meet the challenge in a fitting manner,'' he said.
Congratulating Doordarshan, Bangalore, on finding the perfect
name for the channel, he said he was confident `Chandana'
(sandal) would measure up to all expectations of the Kannadigas
everywhere.
Mr. S. Krishnan, Deputy Director-General, South Zone and West
Zone, said the all-Kannada channel would be beamed in the analog
and digital modes, and was available all over the country with
excellent picture quality.
