Maharashtra seeks aid to tackle naxals
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, APRIL 5. Maharashtra needs 54,000 more policemen to
maintain law and order, control crimes and improve internal
security but the State has no wherewithal to expand its existing
police force, according to Mr. Manikrao Thackeray, Minister of
State for Home.
Mr. Thackeray told the Legislative Assembly today that the State
had worked out a police action plan to tackle the naxalite menace
and was seeking the Union Government's assistance to the extent
of Rs. 140 crores. He was replying to a debate on the demands of
the home department.
He said that the police had arrested 43 ISI agents in Maharashtra
since the new Democratic Front government took over. This
included 15 Pakistanis, one Nepali and 27 Indians.
