Cross-voting
Sir, - The cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections was on such
a disturbing scale that it administered a severe jolt to the
leadership of all the political parties. The defiant behaviour of
the MLAs in not toeing the party line is a portent of the
imminent crash of our democratic structure. Disciplined political
parties are essential for our parliamentary democracy to sustain
and grow strong. As you rightly pointed out in the Editorial
``The party system under siege'' (March 31) ``this phenomenon
threatens to eat into the vitals of the democratic structure.''
C. R. Narayanan,
Cuddalore (TN)
