BSF-BDR coordination meeting begins

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, APRIL. 10. The border coordination meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) began here today. The BDR Director-General, Major General, A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman, assured that his country would extend all possible cooperation in solving the border problems affecting both the countries.

In his opening address, the BSF Director-General, Mr. E.N. Rammohan, said interaction with the BDR would help create a healthy working atmosphere to man the international border effectively.

The crucial issue of fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border, particularly in Tripura, which has the longest border of 856 km with Bangladesh, is likely to figure during the discussions. India has already announced that it would begin the work on border fencing in Tripura this month.

The problem of training camps of militant groups of Tripura and illegal migration to India are also likely to be discussed. The Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani, during his recent visit to Tripura, had announced that India would take up the issue of training camps of rebel groups in Bangladesh with that country as India enjoyed multi-level friendly contacts with Dhaka.

While the 17-member Bangladesh delegation is led by the BDR chief, Major General Fazlur Rahman, the 15-member Indian delegation is headed by the BSF chief, Mr. Rammohan. During the meeting, matters of mutual interest would come up for discussion. The progress on some of the key issues discussed during the DG- level meeting held in Dhaka from October 24 to 29 last year would also be reviewed.

The visiting BDR chief also called on the Home Secretary, Mr. Kamal Pande, later in the evening.
