Haryana Govt. denies distress sale of wheat
CHANDIGARH, APRIL 13. There is no distress sale of wheat by
farmers in Haryana where the Government has made arrangements for
procurement, an official spokesman said here today.
Refuting reports about distress sale, he said: ``There has been
no distress sale by farmers. The State Government, being alive to
its responsibilities, is all set to safeguard the interests of
farmers.'' He said due to weather conditions, wheat arrivals in
the State markets were slightly late.
The Government had set up 21 new purchase centres, taking the
total to 360 since April 1 this year against 339 procurement
centres last year.
Besides, the State food and supplies department, HAFED,
Warehousing Corporation, Agro-Industries Corporation, CONFED and
the Food Corporation of India have been geared up to procure
wheat at the minimum support price as announced by the Union
Government.
The spokesman said 59,649 tonnes of wheat had arrived in the
State markets till yesterday and the agencies had procured 47,958
tonnes of wheat at the maximum support price of Rs. 580 per
quintal. Control rooms have been set up at all the district
headquarters for collecting first hand information from fields
regarding wheat arrivals.
