Film Review: ''Kaadhal Vaanilae''
THANJAI RAJAN'S witty and impressive dialogue is an indisputable
high point of ``Kaadhal Vaanilae'' dubbed in Tamil.
This Ram Gopal Varma film, originally made in Telugu, has Sumanth
and Anthara in the lead. The story is run-of-the-mill no doubt,
dealing as it does with the love that blossoms between a rich,
beautiful girl and a poor, young man. It is the treatment that is
different. Situations have been conceptualised in such a way that
they are not always predictable. But the tragedy that befalls the
lovers eventually, is. Surya (Sumanth) is a fun loving prankster,
who goes about the village with his group of friends without a
care in the world. Radhika is the doting mother of the hero.
Divya (Anthara) comes to her aunt's house in the village for a
short visit and happens to meet Surya. Soon the two fall in love.
Divya's brother Shankar (Manoj Bajpai) is enraged by the affair
and plans to take her away from the village. That the brother is
an unscrupulous villain is established in the very first scene he
is introduced. So what awaits the ill-fated lovers is easy to
guess. Manoj Bajpai makes an impact with his sinister
expressions, ominous threats and emotional outbursts.
Radhika as the mother of the hero portrays warmth, affection,
liveliness, listlessness and misery, all with equal elan.
Anthara, of ``Mast'' fame, exudes glamour, an aspect which is
accented by her attire most of the time. Sumanth's portrayal of
the role of Surya is adequate.
The entire film is a flash-back... recollections of an old,
deranged mother of Surya (Radhika), who recounts the past to a
young group of boys and girls. But because the entire film is a
narrative of the past, the climax becomes predictable even at the
outset.
